About Us
China’s modern history is vast, contested, and complex. Much of the evidence of China’s recent past exists only in the memories of those who lived through it. Their recollections help us to see how people lived, how national affairs affected the individual, and how personal experience may diverge from popular stories. Such materials are priceless but perishable, lost by thousands each day to death and old age. Founded in 2024, the Chinese Memory Archive aims to preserve as many living memories as possible, with a particular focus on long-form interviews. People involved with the Chinese Memory Archive have a diversity of political and cultural beliefs, but the archive itself does not take a political position.
